Before you start, make sure you have everything you need within reach. This includes:

  • A clean diaper
  • Baby wipes
  • Diaper cream
  • A changing pad
  • An extra changing clothes

A designated changing table with a padded surface is ideal, make sure the area is clean and safe.

Step-by-step of changing diapers

  1. Always start by washing your hands to prevent any germs from reaching your baby.
  2. Lay your baby on the changing table. Place your baby with their bottom on the changing surface and legs gently spread apart. Always keep a hand on your baby and never leave them unattended on an elevated surface to prevent the risk of serious injury from a fall.
  3. Remove the dirty diaper. Unfasten the tabs of the dirty diaper, but don’t remove it just yet. Use the front part of the dirty diaper to wipe away any solid and watery waste, folding it underneath your baby as you lift their legs.
  4. Use baby wipes. Gently clean your baby’s bottom using wipes, wiping front to back to avoid infections, especially for girls. Allow the area to dry naturally or pat it gently with a soft cloth to prevent diaper rash.
  5. If your baby is prone to rashes, apply a thin layer of diaper cream as a protective barrier.
  6. Change onto the new diaper. Slide a clean diaper under your baby, making sure the adhesive tabs are at the back. Bring the front of the diaper up and fasten the tabs snugly but not too tight. The diaper should fit comfortably, allowing a finger to slide between the waistband and baby’s tummy.
  7. Double-check fit. Ensure the diaper is properly positioned and all edges are tucked in to prevent leaks.
  8. After completing the diaper change, dress your baby and settle them into a comfortable position. If any clothing was soiled with urine or poop, change them into the fresh outfit you prepared beforehand.
  9. Discard the dirty diaper and baby wipes. Roll up the dirty diaper and secure it with the tabs before disposing of it in a diaper pail or trash bin. Afterwards , wash your hands thoroughly.
